
Most people wipe the outside of their range hood and call it done. That’s the mistake. The exterior is the part doing the least work — the real grease accumulation happens where you can’t see it, inside the filter and along the fan housing, and that’s exactly where most cleaning routines stop short.
I didn’t understand this until I pulled a filter off a hood that “looked” clean and found it coated in a film so thick it had gone tacky. That filter had been quietly losing suction for months while the owner assumed the fan itself was failing. It wasn’t. It was just buried.
A proper range hood cleaning routine has three layers: the filter, the fan and interior housing, and the exterior surface. Skip any one of them and grease keeps building somewhere you’re not looking, which eventually turns into reduced airflow, lingering cooking odors, or in worst cases, a fire hazard sitting quietly above your stove.
Start With the Filter, Not the Surface
The grease filter is the single most important part of this whole process, and it’s the part people neglect longest because it’s tucked out of sight. Most range hoods use either a mesh aluminum filter or a charcoal filter, and only one of those is something you actually clean yourself.
If you have a dishwasher-safe metal mesh filter, the fastest and most thorough method is a hot water soak with degreaser before it ever goes near the dishwasher. Fill a sink or basin with water as hot as your tap allows, add a few tablespoons of a strong degreasing dish soap, and let the filter sit submerged for at least fifteen minutes. Grease that’s been baking on for weeks won’t lift with a quick rinse — it needs time to soften.
Charcoal filters are different, and this trips people up constantly. They’re not washable. They’re a consumable, meant to be replaced every three to six months depending on how often you cook. Trying to scrub or soak a charcoal filter just breaks down the carbon lining and makes it less effective, not cleaner.
Degreasing Without Damaging the Metal

Once the filter’s soaking, turn your attention to the technique itself, because how you scrub matters almost as much as what you scrub with. A soft-bristle brush works the mesh openings without bending the aluminum slats, which warp surprisingly easily under pressure from a stiff scrub brush or steel wool.
Baking soda paste is the move for anything the soap-and-water soak doesn’t fully lift. Mix baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste, work it into the stubborn spots with the soft brush, and let it sit another five minutes before rinsing. It’s mildly abrasive without scratching the metal, and it handles the caked-on residue that pure soap tends to slide right past.
I’ve tested this myself against a handful of commercial degreasers, and the baking soda paste consistently outperforms the cheaper sprays on filters that have gone more than two months without attention. On lighter, more routine buildup, plain hot water and dish soap is honestly enough — you don’t need to reach for anything stronger every single time.
Vinegar can help cut through grease film too, particularly diluted with warm water as a pre-soak rinse, but skip it on any part of the hood with a polished or coated finish. The acidity can dull certain stainless finishes over repeated use.
Cleaning the Fan Blades and Interior Housing
This is the part almost nobody does, and it’s the part that actually affects how well the hood pulls air. Grease doesn’t stop at the filter — it drifts past and settles directly onto the fan blades and the inside of the housing, coating them in a thin layer that thickens over time and throws the blades slightly out of balance.
Before touching anything inside, cut power to the unit. Most range hoods have a simple switch or you can flip the breaker if you’re not confident locating an isolated switch. This isn’t optional.
With the filter removed, you’ll have direct access to the fan blades and interior surface. Use a degreasing spray and a microfiber cloth, working blade by blade rather than trying to wipe the whole assembly in one pass. Grease film here tends to be stickier and older than what’s on the filter, since it’s had longer to bake against warm metal near the motor housing.
What surprised me was how much quieter a hood runs after this step. A fan working against a film of caked grease has to push harder to move the same volume of air, and that extra strain often shows up as a low hum or rattle that people assume means the motor’s wearing out.
Handling the Exterior Surface
Stainless steel range hoods need a specific approach or you’ll end up with streaking that’s more visible than the grease was. Always wipe with the grain of the brushed steel, never against it, using a dedicated stainless steel cleaner or a simple mix of dish soap and warm water on a microfiber cloth.
For painted or powder-coated hoods, a gentler all-purpose cleaner works fine — stainless-specific products aren’t necessary and can sometimes leave a residue on non-stainless finishes that’s harder to remove than the grease.
The control panel deserves its own careful pass. Buttons and digital displays don’t tolerate excess moisture well, so a barely-damp cloth is the right call here rather than spraying cleaner directly onto the panel. Overspray finding its way behind buttons is a common way people end up with a sticky or unresponsive control panel months later.
How Often This Actually Needs to Happen
Frequency depends entirely on how you cook, not on a fixed calendar schedule. Someone frying regularly needs to soak filters every two to three weeks. Someone who mostly boils and steams can stretch that to once a month or even six weeks without much buildup.
A simple gauge: if you run your hand along the filter mesh and it feels tacky rather than smooth, it’s time. Waiting until grease is visibly dripping means you’ve let it go too long, and at that point you’re dealing with a much harder cleaning job than if you’d caught it three weeks earlier.
The exterior can be wiped down weekly as part of a normal kitchen routine, since surface grease and dust accumulate faster there than people expect, especially near the stovetop edge of the hood.
What Most People Don’t Know
Grease residue isn’t just a cosmetic or airflow problem — it’s flammable, and range hood fires are more common than most homeowners realize. A neglected filter sitting directly above an open flame or hot burner is essentially a grease-soaked fire hazard mounted in the worst possible location. Fire departments regularly cite range hood filters as an overlooked ignition point in kitchen fires, precisely because they’re out of sight and easy to forget.
The other thing people miss: charcoal filter replacement schedules aren’t just a manufacturer upsell. A saturated charcoal filter stops absorbing odor almost entirely while still looking physically intact, so you keep smelling cooking odors and assume it’s a ventilation problem when really it’s just a filter that’s done its job and needs swapping.

A clean range hood isn’t about appearances — it’s about a fan that actually moves air the way it’s supposed to and a filter that isn’t quietly becoming a fire risk above your stove. Build the soak-and-scrub routine into your regular kitchen maintenance, gauge frequency by how tacky the filter feels rather than the calendar, and you’ll avoid the buildup that turns a fifteen-minute job into an hour of scrubbing.
