LG Electric Range Problems: 7 Common Fixes

My neighbor called me over on a Sunday because her three-month-old LG range wouldn’t turn on at all. Not a flicker on the display, nothing. Turned out to be a tripped breaker she hadn’t checked because “it’s brand new, why would it need that.” I get some version of that call a few times a year, and it’s rarely the range’s fault in the way people assume. LG electric ranges are generally solid machines, but they do have a handful of failure points that show up again and again once you’ve worked on enough of them.

What follows is the list I actually use when someone describes a problem to me over the phone. I’m not going to walk through diagnosing a control board from scratch here — that’s its own rabbit hole. I’m going to tell you what’s most likely wrong, in the order I’d check it, based on years of running into these same seven issues on LG models specifically.

The Range Won’t Power On At All

Start at the breaker before you touch anything on the range itself. LG ranges pull enough current that a loose or aging breaker connection can trip under normal use, especially during self-clean when the oven draws maximum wattage. If the breaker’s fine and you’re still getting nothing, check the outlet or the terminal block connection at the back of the range — vibration during delivery or installation loosens these more often than people expect.

I’ve tested this myself on a customer’s unit where the range had been shoved back against the wall hard enough to partially dislodge the power cord from the terminal block. Nothing dramatic. No sparks, no smell. Just a range that acted completely dead. Pulling it out and reseating the connection fixed it in about four minutes.

If power is confirmed at the outlet and the terminal block connection looks solid, the next suspect is the main control board. LG’s boards on electric ranges aren’t unusually failure-prone, but they’re also not cheap to replace, so this is the point where I’d usually recommend getting a technician to confirm before ordering the part.

Surface Burners Won’t Heat

On radiant glass-top models, a burner that won’t heat usually comes down to one of three things: the burner element itself, the infinite switch that controls it, or a loose connection where the element plugs into the receptacle underneath the cooktop. The element is the easiest to rule out — swap it with a working burner of the same size from another position on the cooktop. If the problem follows the element to the new spot, you’ve found it. If the element stays dead in the new spot, the issue is either the switch or the wiring behind that specific position, and that’s where I stop being casual about it and either pull the tech manual for the exact model or bring in someone who does this daily.

Most people miss this entirely: a burner that heats unevenly, hot on one side and barely warm on the other, is almost never the element. That’s usually a warped element sitting slightly off the receptacle contacts, and it’s a five-minute fix once you know to look for it instead of ordering a whole new part.

Oven Won’t Heat or Runs at the Wrong Temperature

This is the complaint I hear most often, and it splits into two very different problems depending on the symptom. If the oven doesn’t heat at all, check the bake element first — you can usually see if it’s glowing evenly when the oven’s on. A dark spot or a section that never lights up means the element’s failed and needs replacing, which is a straightforward DIY job on most LG models.

If the oven heats but the temperature reads wrong compared to what you set, that’s a sensor problem more often than not. LG ovens use a probe-style sensor mounted at the back of the cavity, and these drift out of calibration over years of use, or fail outright after enough heat cycles. Testing it with a multimeter against LG’s resistance spec for that model is more reliable than guessing based on how your food turns out.

The first time I dealt with this on an LG unit specifically, I assumed it was the control board because the display seemed to be doing something odd. It wasn’t. It was a nineteen-dollar sensor that had drifted about 40 degrees off spec. Cheap fix, expensive-feeling problem until you know where to look.

Self-Clean Cycle Won’t Start or Trips a Fault Code

LG’s self-clean cycle runs the oven hot enough that it stresses components that otherwise never see that kind of heat, which is exactly why problems tend to surface during or right after it. A door that won’t lock is the most common trigger — the cycle physically won’t begin until the door lock motor engages, and if that motor’s worn or the door switch is misaligned, the range will just sit there refusing to start.

What surprised me was how often the fix is mechanical rather than electrical. Sometimes the door hinge has sagged slightly from years of use, just enough that the lock mechanism can’t fully engage. A hinge adjustment solves what looks like an electronic fault. I wouldn’t have guessed that the first few times I ran into it either.

If you’re getting an actual fault code on the display during self-clean, LG’s codes for this are specific enough that it’s worth looking up your exact model’s code list rather than assuming it matches a general electric range error. The codes aren’t universal across brands, and guessing wrong here wastes a repair visit.

Control Panel Unresponsive or Buttons Sticking

Spills are the number one cause here, and it’s almost always something sugary or greasy that’s worked its way under the touch panel or into the button housing on non-touch models. A control panel that responds to some presses but not others, or that seems to register phantom touches, points to residue rather than a hardware failure most of the time.

Cleaning under and around the panel with a damp microfiber cloth, never spraying cleaner directly onto it, resolves this more often than people expect before they call anyone. I’ve seen this go wrong when someone sprays glass cleaner straight onto a touch panel trying to fix exactly this problem, and moisture gets behind the panel and makes things worse instead of better.

Range Displays an Error Code You Don’t Recognize

LG uses a fairly consistent error code structure across their electric range lineup, but the specific codes and what they mean can shift slightly between model years. I keep a printed copy of the code list for the models I service most, because pulling it up on a phone with greasy hands mid-repair gets old fast. The most common ones I run into are related to the oven temperature sensor, the door lock assembly during self-clean, and occasionally a communication error between the control board and a secondary board on dual-oven models. None of these are usually a sign you need a whole new range. They’re pointing at a specific part, and once you know which one, the fix is targeted instead of guesswork.

What Most People Don’t Know

Most people don’t realize that a lot of LG range “control board failures” that get diagnosed by less experienced techs are actually a bad connection at the wiring harness that plugs into the board, not the board itself. Boards get blamed and replaced at real expense when the actual fix was reseating a harness connector that had backed out slightly from heat cycling over time. If a tech quotes you a board replacement without first pulling the board and visually checking every harness connection, it’s worth asking whether that step happened. It’s a small thing that saves people real money more often than it should.

From experience, the smarter move is always to rule out the cheap, common stuff first — breakers, connections, sensors — before assuming the expensive part is the culprit. LG ranges aren’t unusually fragile. Most of what goes wrong with them has a fairly ordinary explanation once you’ve seen it a few times.
