
Most people assume matching a range hood to a range is as simple as buying whatever’s labeled “30 inch.” That’s usually where the mistake starts. I’ve seen homeowners install a hood that’s technically the right width on paper but still leaves smoke curling around the edges of the cooktop because nobody accounted for overhang, mounting height, or airflow. CFM, or cubic feet per minute, measures how much air the hood actually moves. This is the number people skip past most often, and it’s arguably more important than width. A common rule of thumb: multiply your cooktop’s total BTU output by 1, meaning a 30 inch gas range putting out roughly 30,000 to 45,000 combined BTUs across its burners typically calls for a hood rated between 300 and 450 CFM at minimum. Electric ranges generally need less — often in the 250 to 300 CFM range is sufficient for a standard 30 inch electric cooktop, since there’s no open flame adding extra heat and combustion byproducts into the air.
Undersized CFM is the quiet failure point in a lot of kitchens. The hood runs, the fan spins, but it’s not moving enough air to actually clear what’s rising off the cooktop. Undersized ducting chokes the airflow no matter how powerful the hood’s motor is rated — I’ve seen a 600 CFM hood perform like a 300 CFM unit simply because it was forced through a duct that was too narrow for the volume of air being pushed.
