The motor’s attempting to turn, the blade’s caught on built-up frost, and the resulting sound is mechanical even though nothing’s actually broken.
Before assuming the fan motor needs replacing, complete a full defrost first and see if the noise resolves once everything’s dry. If your standard ice maker works fine but Craft Ice has stopped, or the reverse, treat them as two separate systems for troubleshooting purposes rather than assuming one problem explains both.
Craft Ice units are also more sensitive to freezer temperature consistency than the standard ice maker, since the larger cube size requires a longer, more consistent freeze cycle to form properly. If Craft Ice production has slowed or stopped while the standard ice maker keeps working normally, check freezer temperature stability before suspecting a mechanical failure in the Craft Ice unit specifically.
It’s also worth checking that nothing in the freezer is blocking the Craft Ice unit’s own dedicated tray from seating properly, since it’s a separate removable component from the standard bin on most models. A tray that’s slightly out of position or not fully clicked into place can prevent the unit from recognizing it’s ready to cycle, which looks identical to a mechanical failure from the outside but takes ten seconds to fix once you know to check it.
What Most People Don’t Know
LG’s ice maker compartments route condensation drainage through a small channel that’s prone to clogging with mineral deposits over time, separate entirely from the frost issue everyone already knows to check. Even after a complete defrost and thorough drying, a clogged drain channel means moisture has nowhere to go on future cycles, and frost buildup returns faster than it should.
