How to Clean a Countertop Ice Maker Properly

A countertop ice maker isn’t the same animal as the one built into your fridge, and cleaning it isn’t either. There’s no water line running in fresh water on demand. Instead, the same water sits in a tank, gets pumped through the same internal loop, and gets reused cycle after cycle until you empty and refill it. That standing-water setup means residue builds up faster than most people expect, and it’s a big part of why countertop units start producing cloudy or off-tasting ice within just a few weeks of regular use if nobody’s cleaning them.

The good news is that cleaning one takes less time than a built-in unit, since there’s no need to access anything behind a fridge or freezer wall. Everything’s sitting right there on the counter.

Empty and Unplug Before Anything Else

Unplug the unit and empty both the ice basket and the water reservoir completely. Don’t reuse any of that water for the cleaning process itself, since it’s the exact water that’s been sitting and accumulating whatever residue prompted the cleaning in the first place.

Most countertop models have a drain plug on the bottom or back for this exact purpose. Use it rather than tipping the whole unit over the sink, which risks getting water into electrical components that should stay completely dry throughout this process.

Set the unit somewhere with a towel underneath before pulling the drain plug, since these tend to release water faster than expected the first time you use them. Once it’s fully drained, take a moment to look inside the empty tank with the unit’s interior light if it has one, or a flashlight if it doesn’t. Visible discoloration or a slightly slimy feel along the bottom tells you upfront how thorough this cleaning needs to be, rather than guessing based on how the ice has been tasting.

Run a Vinegar Solution Through the System

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, and fill the reservoir to its normal operating level. Run a few complete ice-making cycles with this solution instead of plain water, letting the pump circulate it through the same internal pathways that normally handle your drinking water.

I’ve tested this myself across a couple of different countertop models, and running actual cycles rather than just wiping the tank matters more than people expect. The internal tubing and pump housing are exactly the spots residue builds up first, and a surface wipe of the visible tank never reaches those areas at all.

Discard any ice produced during these cleaning cycles. It’s carrying the vinegar solution through the same mold that’s about to make your actual ice, so none of it should end up in a drink.

How many cycles you need depends on how long it’s been since the last cleaning. A unit that’s never been cleaned, or hasn’t been touched in several months, benefits from three or four full cycles rather than just one or two. A unit that’s on a regular cleaning schedule already usually only needs a single cycle to stay ahead of buildup. There’s no real downside to running an extra cycle if you’re unsure, since it just means slightly more vinegar solution used, not any risk to the unit itself.

Wipe Down Visible Surfaces

While the system runs its vinegar cycles, use a soft cloth to wipe down the ice basket, the tank interior above the waterline, and the lid or cover if your model has one. Hard water areas especially tend to leave a visible white film along the tank’s interior walls that a running cycle alone won’t fully clear.

Most people miss this entirely, but the ice scoop that comes with most countertop units gets handled constantly and rarely gets cleaned at all. It sits in a slightly damp environment between uses and picks up the same residue and occasional mold risk as the rest of the system. Wash it with regular dish soap and rinse thoroughly every time you do a full unit cleaning.

The lid deserves the same attention, particularly around the hinge if it has one, since moisture tends to collect there and gets overlooked in a quick wipe-down. A small brush, even an unused toothbrush, reaches into that hinge gap better than a cloth does, and it’s worth the extra minute given how often that spot gets skipped entirely.

Flush With Plain Water Before Regular Use

Once the vinegar cycles are done, empty the reservoir completely and refill with plain water. Run two or three more full cycles with this plain water, discarding that ice as well, to clear any remaining vinegar taste from the internal pathways before trusting the next batch for actual use.

From experience, the smarter move is to taste-test a piece of ice from that final flush cycle before considering the cleaning finished. A faint sour taste means another flush cycle is worth running before switching back to normal use.

What Most People Don’t Know

The pump housing itself, the small motor assembly that circulates water from the tank up into the ice mold, is a part almost nobody thinks to clean directly, and it’s one of the more common places mold actually establishes itself in these units. Standing water sitting against a warm motor housing between uses creates close to ideal conditions for it.

If your model allows any access to the pump area without full disassembly, a light wipe with the vinegar solution during the cleaning cycles helps here specifically. Most cleaning guides stop at the tank and basket and never mention the pump at all, which is exactly why a unit that’s “been cleaned” can still develop a musty smell within a few weeks.

Every one to two weeks is a reasonable cleaning baseline for a countertop unit given how often the same water gets recirculated, tightened up if you notice cloudiness or odor forming faster than that. It’s a smaller, faster job than cleaning a built-in ice maker, which makes it easier to actually stick to a real schedule instead of waiting for a problem to show up first.
